Using Sparklers at your next event

“Grand Exits” at your wedding and sparklers at your event are sure to leave a lasting impression on your guest and is one of the hottest summer trends! While sparklers are extremely fun for your guest there are some tips you should use before using them for your wedding or event to ensure you do not run into any problems when you are ready to use them.  Using sparklers is something you need to plan down to the last detail to ensure they work properly and safely.

Here are 7 tips to using sparklers at your next event:

1)      Select the right sparklers: Depending on the sparklers you purchase, there are different burn times based on the length of the sparklers you select. Research the burn time for the sparklers you purchase, especially if you plan on having little ones holding them.

10” long sparklers burn for about 55 seconds

14” long sparklers burn for about 1 minute

20’ long sparklers burn for about 2 minutes

36’ long sparklers burn for about 5 minutes

2)      Check with your venue and the local authorities: If you are having your event at a venue check with the venue to make sure there will be no issues in using fireworks on the property. Also checks with the local authorities to determine if it is legal for you to use sparklers as well. Nothing would be worse than making special plans to have sparklers at your event and the venue does not allow it or the fire marshalls show up and shut down your plans.

3)      Select the right time for the sparklers:  Timing is crucial in making sure the sparklers are effective. If you are using them in the summer, keep in mind that it gets darker much later versus using them in the fall when the sun sets earlier. Depending on the season you are hosting your event you may also want to plan your event around a specified time.

4)      Notify your guest: Make sure you notify your guest ahead of time to that you are planning something special at a particular time so they are well aware. If you are planning on having your guest participate in using the sparklers make sure they know! Set up a sign to alert guest to the time in which you will be breaking out the sparklers.

5)      Do a test: Using sparklers can be tricky especially if you will be taking photographs at your event. When doing your research on the sparklers to use, try them out first before making your final decision. Some sparklers let off a lot of smoke once lit and you may also get burnt while the sparks are flying off. Test them out first before you buy a large amount of sparklers that will end up giving you are your guest a lot of problems.

6)      Purchase something to put sparklers out in: The sparklers were a hit now what? Once you have finished with the sparklers you need a place to put them out in something that is nonflammable. Purchase a galvanized steel pail and sand for the sparklers to be placed in once you are complete.

7)      Select someone to be in charge: You do not want to hand out a bunch of sparklers and leave your guest to fend for themselves. Make sure you have at least one person who is knowledgeable and can give your guest proper instructions on how to use sparklers safely.

One last thing to keep in mind is that you make sure you have plenty of matches on hand to light the sparklers and if you are using a photographer alert them to your plan! Sparklers are the perfect way to light up the night and your guests are sure to love using them.
